Crossing the Threshold: Telltales 24 March
March 26th, 2015 | Published in Frontpage, Uncategorized
The atmosphere at Telltales was warm, jovial and up-beat on 24 March, despite plenty of opportunity for dwelling on dark subject matter, with the theme of ‘Threshold’.
Tony Foster opened the evening with a tale of dashed hopes and averted disaster. Sarah Clare, one of 3 writers new to Telltales, introduced a welcome subversive note with poems including ‘Saturday Night Fever (or ‘Alone at the Open Mic’). Two stand-out poems from an evening of much variety and talent were Heike Brinkmann’s ‘Rubble Women’ and ‘Milk Bottles’ by Sally Wills-Heath.
Telltales favourite Rob Barratt was back (en route to Australia) with his so-clever-it’s daft performance poetry. Maureen Sleeman’s short story struck a different tone in a moving exploration of what happens when you approach a point of no return. Dominic Power’s poetry had both gravitas and gratuitous audience participation; he reminded us that one should never write poetry about the moon (now, there’s a challenge!) Our last writer to share his work was Aaron Kent, with his unique brand of passionate and experimental poetry.
In May Telltales will be performing at the St Ives Festival on Saturday 16 May as well as at Dolly’s in Falmouth on Tuesday 19 May. The theme for both events is Intrusion. We welcome submissions in all genres of writing (maximum 1,600 words). The deadline for submissions is Saturday 9 May.
